Andrea Mitchell

Andrea Mitchell is an American television anchor, journalist and commentator on NBC News based in Washington D.C. After growing up with her family in New York City, Mitchell earned a BA in English literature at the University of Pennsylvania. Mitchell started her career as a journalist with KYW Radio and TV, Philadelphia in 1967. In 1976, she joined CBS affiliate WDVM-TV situated in Washington DC (then WTOP). In Washington she was made general correspondent by NBC News a year later. In 1981 began working for the White House and became chief Congress correspondent in 1988. Then, in 1992 she was named chief White House Correspondent and in 1994 chief foreign affairs reporter in NBC News. Mitchell was a host as well as a panelist on the TV news show Meet the Press. Mitchell also participated as a panelist in the 1988 debates with George Bush & Michael Dukakis. Mitchell is the wife of Alan Greenspan who was the previous chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. In 2005, Mitchell received the prestigious Goldsmith Career Award for Excellence in Journalism from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and, in 2004, The Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) recognized Mitchell by awarding her the Leonard Zeidenberg Award for her contribution to the protection of First Amendment Freedoms. Mitchell initially covered the White House for NBC News from 1981-1988 during both of the administrations of Ronald Reagan. Mitchell covered a variety of notable news stories like arms control, tax reforms to the budget and also the Iran Contra scandal. Mitchell also attended numerous summits as part of the President Reagan along with Mikhail Gorbachev.
